The Carbone 4 consulting firm is a reference in the field of “carbon constraint” accounting and strategy for companies. By “carbon constraint” we refer to issues related to climate change–in the future greenhouse gases may be subject to a “carbon tax”–and to the depletion of fossil energy resources, leading to rising energy prices, supply problems and a highly volatile market.

We provide companies with the methods and tools that will enable them to assess their degree of exposure to this constraint, in physical, economic and strategic terms.

We offer a wide range of services, tailored to each company’s circumstances and the work already accomplished to take carbon constraints into account.

For companies or groups of companies looking for an initial evaluation of their degree of vulnerability, we carry out Bilan Carbone® assessments using the ADEME method developed by Jean-Marc Jancovici, co-founder of Carbone 4.

• We use ADEME’s carbon accounting tools and databases, but the customer’s own data on emission factors can be used if they provide more accurate or detailed information.
• The level of investigation and the boundaries of the assessment are always thoroughly discussed with the customer at the beginning of the assignment, guaranteeing that the customer will be able to fully appropriate the results.
• All findings are fully and transparently documented.
• The method we use and the transparency of our analyses ensure that the results are reproducible and compatible with other forms of carbon accounting and environmental reporting (ISO14064, Carbon Disclosure Project, etc.)

For companies that have already conducted their carbon assessment, we accompany their operational responses to carbon constraints

• Elaboration of operational action plans to reduce GHG emissions and direct or indirect dependency on consumption of hydrocarbons, and assistance in implementing these plans
• Setting up carbon accounting methodology
• Developing specific tools to assess the carbon footprint of a given service, project or product, and ways to use this criterion in commercial practices.

We also help companies and organisations take carbon constraints into consideration in developing their strategy, based on detailed analyses of relevant entities (business unit, product/market pairs, etc.).

• These analyses can help companies rethink their investments, and we have developed methods and tools to evaluate costs per tonne of avoided CO₂-equivalent.

To ensure the success of the action undertaken we offer seminars and training sessions on climate/energy/carbon assessment for all audiences (Steering Committees, executive management, in-depth training, etc.)

Carbone4 also conducts methodological studies and research:

• In 2008, Carbone4 updated the ADEME Bilan Carbone® tool (V6)
• We developed a method to calculate CO2 emissions mitigation costs for measures funded or managed by the State government, for the French Environment Ministry, and ADEME.
