Interview with: Cesar Dugast, Alexia Soyeux

Today, the concept of carbon neutrality is used everywhere. On a global scale, it refers to the balance between human-caused CO2 emissions and removals.

What is the connection between carbon neutrality and the Paris Agreement’s goals of limiting global warming to 1.5 or 2°C? How should a company do its part and contribute to global carbon neutrality? Are we on track to achieve net-zero goals?

In this episode, César Dugast, Manager and Head of the Carbon Neutrality Division at Carbone 4, speaks with Alexia Soyeux to help us better understand the topic.

The concept of carbon neutrality dates back to the Kyoto Protocol, signed in 1997, which aimed to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. This concept has gradually evolved and become more clearly defined, particularly since the Paris Agreement was adopted in 2015, and is now at the center of the climate debate and climate goals.

In order to limit global warming to +1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, experts say it is essential that we achieve net-zero emissions by 2050—a goal we are still far from reaching.

Just as the government and citizens must do their part to collectively achieve carbon neutrality, businesses must contribute their fair share to this global balance. To do so, they must both reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and develop—or participate in the development of—carbon sinks, while being careful not to get lost in the concept of carbon offsetting.
