2018 Green Bond Awards: SNCF Réseau Recognized for Its Impact Report, Developed in Collaboration with Carbone 4
The 2018 Green Bond Awards, presented by Environmental Finance, have just named SNCF Réseau the winner of the Best Impact Report of the Year award. Carbone 4 is proud to be part of this achievement, having co-developed with the SNCF subsidiary a benchmark methodology for assessing the carbon impact of rail infrastructure investments.
The development of this methodology This initiative stems from SNCF Réseau’s commitment to highlighting the positive impacts of its Green Bonds* program—which is primarily used to finance the sustainable modernization of its network, including rail infrastructure renovations and new projects. The innovative methodology developed by Carbone 4 and SNCF Réseau makes it possible, in particular, to assess the carbon footprint of the entire Green Bond program as well as the emissions avoided through this financing compared to a baseline scenario. This initiative was launched to ensure transparency toward its investors and civil society and is intended to become a benchmark for rail infrastructure stakeholders. “Together with SNCF Réseau, we have co-developed a rigorous and innovative calculation methodology. It allows us to compare the emissions resulting from the renovation of an existing track or the construction of new infrastructure with the emissions that would have occurred in the absence of such projects. By sharing this methodology with full transparency, SNCF Réseau is helping to establish a standard for calculating the impact of transportation infrastructure projects, one that incorporates both the carbon footprint of construction sites and the emissions avoided through the use of the infrastructure, which, in turn, prevents a modal shift,” says Jean-Marc Jancovici, founding partner of Carbone 4.
* A Green Bonds program is a bond issuance by a company on the financial markets to finance a project or activity that benefits the environment. Rail transportation falls under the category of activities eligible for this type of bond.
