Influencers Joining Forces in the Race Toward a Low-Carbon Future

Major project owners and specifiers wanted to join forces within a “low-carbon specifiers’ hub,” which they entrusted to theIFPEB and the consulting firm Carbone 4. The hub is an open collaboration platform designed to identify, foster, and implement low-carbon solutions for the construction industry, led by its participants. The 2020 regulations are currently being finalized and will introduce the assessment of greenhouse gas emissions over the entire life cycle, in line with our National Low-Carbon Strategy.. The market—particularly when it comes to access to land—will ultimately determine the difference between the lowest-carbon production methods and all others. To prepare for all future assessments—whether related to certifications or regulations—the participants’ goal is to rapidly develop an operational culture of low-carbon project management by pooling some of their efforts. The hub will share several operational tools for the technical and economic selection of the best low-carbon solutions and will provide training for project managers. Analyses and lessons learned will be shared, with solutions organized by supply chain and by lot. The threshold for the “economically accessible carbon technology floor” will be monitored. The hub’s first participants are Bouygues Immobilier, Bouygues Construction, BNP Paribas Real Estate, Groupama Immobilier, Poste Immo, and Rabot Dutilleul. The first tools will be delivered in the fall. Laurent MOREL—president of the Institute—highlights the challenges: “It took us 40 years to develop an energy culture in the construction industry. We don’t have 40 years to decarbonize—we have 10 years to cut our emissions in half! Our collective action aims to accelerate this transition in a practical way.”

Project owners who wish to participate are invited to come forward, and interested engineering firms are also invited to get in touch with the initiative.
