The 2-infrachallenge method is supported by a high-level international scientific committee
The 2-infrachallenge team is pleased to have the support of a high-level scientific committee throughout the project. The scientific committee is composed of the following members: • Carel Cronenberg – Associate Director, MRV Manager – EBRD • Stéphane Hallegatte – Lead Economist – World Bank • Mireille Martini – Policy Analyst – OECD • Morgane Nicol – Program Director – I4CE • Aurélien Saussay – Head of the Environment Division – Sciences Po, French Economic Observatory
The purpose of this scientific committee is to challenge and inform key methodological decisions regarding investment scenarios consistent with the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the assessment of climate risks. The committee also ensures that methodological choices are consistent with the latest scientific advances on these issues.
About 2-infrachallenge
"2-infra challenge" is a new assessment method led by Carbone 4 that will measure the alignment of infrastructure with a 2-degree pathway and the associated climate risks.
This project is supported by major infrastructure stakeholders: Agence Française de Développement (AFD), La Banque Postale Asset Management, Meridiam, and EIT Climate KIC.To achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, it is essential to redirect funding on a massive scale toward sustainable and resilient infrastructure that will enable the low-carbon transition. The infrastructure decisions made today are crucial for future emissions resulting from their use for decades after they are built. In other words, today’s infrastructure investment decisions commit us to a very long-term climate future.
Infrastructure is also highly vulnerable to the risks posed by climate change, including physical risks and transition risks, which could lead to a loss in their value. To align their investment strategy with a 2-degree pathway and to manage climate risks, infrastructure finance stakeholders need operational and shared tools. The method “2-infra challenge” will enable infrastructure investors to answer two questions: • Is my investment strategy aligned with the 2-degree target, and how can I set it on the right path to achieve that target? • To what extent are my assets exposed to climate risks, particularly transition risks and physical risks? This methodology, which will be multisectoral and multigeographic, can be used by all stakeholders in infrastructure investment and financing. Launched in October 2018 as part of Paris InfraWeek, the development of the methodology will continue through June 2019.
