What would a carbon-neutral France look like in 2050?

Carbone 4 is participating in the “Vision ZEN1 2050” study, launched in December 2017 by the EpE (Entreprises pour l’Environnement) association. The goal of this project is to outline what a carbon-neutral France would look like by 2050 and to define the conditions for its implementation. The results of this study are expected by the end of 2018 and will inform the debate on the revision of the national low-carbon strategy and the multi-year energy plan.

As part of his climate plan unveiled in July 2017, Nicolas Hulot, Minister of Ecological and Solidarity Transition, affirmed his commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This ambitious goal will bring about profound changes in our current society.

EpE members have announced their intention to play an active role in shaping this path forward and are launching the “Vision ZEN 2050” study. The goal of this project is to take a leap toward a carbon-neutral France by 2050 and to answer two main questions:

• How would the French live in this new economy?

• What would be the main trends in the major sectors of the economy?

Several pathways will be examined to assess the best conditions for their implementation from social, political, economic, and climate perspectives. The various scenarios will make it possible toIdentify the priority actions to be taken over the next five years to enable France to achieve its goal.

To conduct this study, EpE has assembled a multidisciplinary team that will work on each of the topics. Carbone 4 is specifically responsible for coordinating the work on the 2050 vision, while Enerdata will lead the work on the trajectory component. Solagro, Philippe Quirion (CNRS), Pierre-Noël Giraud (CERNA, Mines ParisTech), and Stéphane Labranche (IPCC) will also contribute to the discussion with their complementary perspectives, as will numerous experts who will be consulted throughout the study to ensure the comprehensiveness of the analysis.
