Growing environmental pressures—including more extreme weather events, strain on water resources, and the collapse of ecosystem services—are reducing agricultural yields, which are projected to fall by 3.6% in France by 2024 (1), threatening the stability of production and making it essential to adapt farming practices and production systems.
In light of the French National Low-Carbon Strategy’s (SNBC) requirement to double France’s carbon sinks by 2050, agriculture must transform its soils from net emitters to net carbon sinks (2). This regulatory constraint, coupled with the need for agricultural resources to decarbonize other sectors, is creating an unprecedented convergence: reinventing agricultural practices and models is becoming a key lever for ensuring the competitiveness and profitability of these sectors.
Inputs, equipment, agricultural production, packaging, distribution, and waste management: every link in the french food supply chain relies on fossil fuels, which account for 74% of the sector’s total energy consumption (3). This dependence exposes stakeholders to volatile costs and supply risks.

This collaborative effort brought together about 30 business unit staff members to incorporate emissions reduction, adaptation, water, and biodiversity, while ensuring the technical and economic feasibility of the actions.
