Reference framework for analysing the resilience of companies to climate change impacts


The climates we know are changing: the intensity of floods and the frequency of fires and heat waves are increasing, and rainfall and drought cycles are becoming more erratic. Our companies' activities must anticipate these changes and ensure that they are ready to absorb these new climatic shocks.

Given the lack of standards for analyzing these physical risks, Carbone 4 launched the OCARA project. Developed in partnership with the Ademe, HDI Global France, Bureau Veritas and the CCI Grand Est, OCARA is the first standard for analyzing the resilience of companies to climate drift.

OCARA provides a method and a tool to diagnose climate resilience and launch an adaptation process. OCARA is structured in 3 key steps. The climate resilience analysis (step 1) assesses the company's level of resilience to the current climate. Combined with step 2 (climate impact projections and scenarios), the approach enables a diagnosis of physical risks that is both holistic and systemic. Step 3 (resilience plan) allows the identification and planning of adaptation trajectories.

OCARA helps understand, identify and prioritize the weak or strong signals of climate change based on a holistic vision of climate impacts on the whole value chain of the company. It also provides action plans to build an adaptation plan to strengthen the resilience of the company as a whole. It provides operational results on the concrete risks of climate change for the company: the most risky processes, the most material impacts, the most resilient elements, the most critical hazards, as well as action plans.

Like the Bilan Carbone method, the OCARA method is intended to be used directly by companies and enriched with experience and knowledge. To help its dissemination, the method and tool are available for free download and follow-ups are already planned.
