2020–2021 Edition of the Net Zero Initiative: Release of the Final Report—Thursday, July 8, 10:00 a.m.–11:00 a.m.
In April 2020, Carbone 4 published the Net Zero Initiative (NZI) framework, and laid the groundwork for a new interpretation of the issue of “net-zero emissions” at the corporate level. According to ADEME, the concept of net zero only makes sense on a global scale and at the national level.
In line with this approach, Since its inception, the Net Zero Initiative has sought to view a company not as an entity that can be “neutral” in and of itself, but as one that must, above all, contribute its fair share to the goal of global or national carbon neutrality.
After developing a framework for the NZI that defines three independent and complementary pillars on which companies must take action, the Net Zero Initiative sought to explore two major issues in 2020: - Measuring Pillar B (emissions avoided): What metric and calculation rules should be used to measure a company’s ability to contribute to the decarbonization of its ecosystem? - Setting Goals for Pillar C (carbon sinks): What is the appropriate level of contribution a company should make toward increasing carbon sinks?
This study was conducted in partnership with:
- 12 corporate sponsors: EDF, ENGIE, Orange, Poste Immo, RATP, LVMH, Decathlon, Unima, Woodeum/WO2, Tikamoon, GRTgaz, Generali;
- A Technical Working Group bringing together some 30 experts from France (I4CE, IDDRI, FNE, Ministry of Ecological Transition, ADEME, etc.) and around the world (UNFCCC, NewClimate Institute, World Resources Institute, WWF US, University of Oxford, Carbon Market Watch, ClimateAnalytics, etc.).
On July 8, a presentation was held on the work carried out as part of the 2020–2021 edition of the Net Zero Initiative.
The report's key messages were presented by:
César Dugast, Manager, Head of the Net Zero Initiative Project
Zénon Vasselin, Senior Consultant, Pillar C Expert
Rodrigo Baranna, Senior Consultant, Pillar B Expert
Augustin Fragnière, professor and researcher at the University of Lausanne, member of the Technical Working Group
Emilie Aubry, Climate Issues Leader at Decathlon, a 2020–2021 sponsor of the Net Zero Initiative
